Five basics for summer weather

With a well-chosen basic wardrobe, you have a foundation of clothes that you can create lots of wearable combinations with. The idea of the basic wardrobe is that these clothes should be a kind of stylistic framework, which you can wear with almost any other type of garment, and thus work with, for example, garments with strong patterns or colours. On hot days, it's easy to dress mostly for practicality to endure the heat. With a good basic wardrobe, you also maintain your style level. No matter which of the garments below you choose to combine with each other, you will have a timelessly stylish outfit.

Linen shirt

Linen is a breathable fabric to wear. A long-sleeved shirt has the advantage of providing sun protection when you need to cover your arms. When it gets too hot to wear long sleeves, simply roll up the sleeves and unbutton the required amount of buttons on the collar, thus creating a garment that is both more stylishly versatile and more breathable than a short-sleeved t-shirt or shirt. Linen wrinkles, it's part of the process. Good quality fabrics also wrinkle significantly less than more inexpensive fabrics with short fibre lengths.

Sunglasses

Your sunglasses are perhaps the most visible part of your style. So choose them carefully. Allow the colour of the frame to harmonise with the clothes you wear. Brown, but also blue, green or transparent frames create soft contrasts with clothes in lighter, summery colours. Black generates a little more attitude. Remember, in this case function is as important as aesthetics. Sunglasses with polarized lenses may be worth considering if you spend a lot of time by the water, as they filter out harmful UV reflections.

Linen trousers

Summer trousers should preferably be made from lighter fabrics, which are more breathable to wear than darker versions. Linen trousers are ideal in the warm summer months. Thin cotton fabrics are also very useful, but immediately become noticeably warmer to wear. Again, linen trousers can be wrinkled - that's part of the charm.

Summer shoes

When it comes to stylish summer shoes, loafers or car shoes are probably the most versatile option in terms of styling. Paired with a white shirt and linen trousers, they are wonderfully casual and dressy enough for a restaurant visit. At the same time, they work just as well paired with shorts when at the beach. You should always wear them without socks. Espadrilles are very casual and comfortable shoes, which always remain informal no matter what they are combined with. Sneakers are an option that many people feel comfortable wearing, and are never wrong in casual settings. Keep them classically white and understated in design.

Shorts

Shorts are always a steadfast in the wardrobe of the stylish man. Sure, there are situations where you should stick to long trousers, but to generally say that shorts are not compatible with good style is simply wrong. However, be sure to make a distinction between swim shorts with an elasticated waist, and shorts made to be worn on other occasions. With well-fitting, high-quality and well-designed swim shorts, you can attend a multitude of different events, make sure you're beachside. Use common sense when deciding whether or not shorts are suitable for the occasion. The optimal length for formal shorts is the hem being just above the wearer's knee.

The series also takes a deep dive into British cultural heritage through the clothing choices. There we can see classic styles and timeless garments. Through elegant suits, tweed blazers and top hats, the range conveys an air of sophisticated elegance with a strong sense of British heritage.

It's no surprise that The Gentlemen has quickly topped Netflix charts worldwide. With its mix of suspense, humour and stylistically well-thought-out visual details, the series has become a favourite among viewers, where not least the clothing style can inspire. Below we advise on the style details.

Eddie Horniman (Theo James)

Eddie Horniman's clothing style is imbued with a classic British sophistication, with a dash of country charm. The three-piece suit with a waistcoat, tweed blazer and houndstooth pattern is part of his daily attire. De dresscode in donker pak is ongetwijfeld een van de meest voorkomende en tijdloos stijlvolle manieren voor gastheren om hun gasten te laten weten hoe ze zich moeten kleden voor een speciale gelegenheid. Ooit stonden dresscodes in steen gebeiteld en mocht er onder geen beding aan getornd worden. Hoe strikt deze dresscode moet worden geïnterpreteerd of uitgevoerd, is in de loop der tijd echter iets minder streng geworden met betrekking tot kleurkeuze of zelfs pakken met een zeer discreet patroon. Mannen met een goed gevoel voor stijl weten vaak intuïtief wat gepast is. Als je nog steeds twijfelt, kun je het beste contact opnemen met de gastheer of gastvrouw.

Donker pak: Formaliteitsniveau

De dresscode voor een donker pak wordt beschouwd als semi-formeel tot formeel en rust rustig en comfortabel net onder "black tie" op de formaliteitsschaal. Wat houdt een donker pak in?

Het colbert kan zowel single-breasted als double-breasted zijn. Zorg ervoor dat je weet welke knopen je moet dichtknopen. Als je wilt, kun je ook een vest onder de blazer dragen, een zogenaamd driedelig pak dus. Het enige belangrijke is dat het vest van dezelfde stof en kleur is als de rest van het pak.

Het pak

Jouw pak mag gedessineerd zijn, maar wel heel discreet. Een stof met een patroon maakt jouw pak meteen minder formeel. Voorbeelden die kunnen werken zijn heel subtiele krijtstrepen, die alleen van dichtbij opvallen. Voor de heren met lef is een subtiel ton op ton ruitjespatroon ook een optie. Een suggestie die door de meest goed geklede mannen wordt omarmd, is een subtiele visgraat geweven stof die diepte en zwier toevoegt. De stof is bij voorkeur van een lichtere wollen constructie met een hoog aantal draden.

Het colbert kan enkel- of dubbele rij knopen hebben. Zorg er wel voor dat je goed weet welke knopen wanneer moeten worden gedaan. Bij pakken met twee of drie knopen mag de onderste knoop nooit worden vastgemaakt. Voor een driedelig pak met een gilet spreekt het voor zich dat het gilet van dezelfde stof moet zijn als de rest van het pak.

Het overhemd

De dresscode van het Dark Suit vereist een wit overhemd van een katoenen stof van goede kwaliteit. Het mag een enkele of dubbele manchet hebben en zogenaamde 'button-down' kragen moeten worden vermeden omdat ze een minder formele look creëren. Zelfs een vleugje kleur zorgt ervoor dat het overhemd aanzienlijk minder formeel aanvoelt en dus ongeschikt is voor de meeste gelegenheden met een Dark Suit dresscode.

De stropdas of vlinderdas

Om volledig aan de dresscode te voldoen, wordt er van je verwacht dat je een donkere stropdas of vlinderdas draagt. Zijden accessoires maken een klassiek formele indruk, maar delicate, matte wollen stoffen kunnen een serieuze hoeveelheid stijl aan je ensemble toevoegen. Houd er rekening mee dat zwarte dassen in veel culturen worden geassocieerd met rouw en dat het niet ongewoon is dat obers bij formele gelegenheden zwarte vlinderdassen dragen met witte overhemden en zwarte blazers.

Stropdassen en vlinderdassen met subtiele, kleinschalige patronen zijn het meest geschikt in deze context. Ook hier zijn patronen die enkel toon-op-toon in de structuur van je das verweven zijn een uitstekende keuze om een interessante, maar niet te opvallende toets toe te voegen. Geweven paisley patronen zijn bijzonder stijlvol. Het dragen van een stropdas in dezelfde kleur als je pak, in dezelfde of een iets donkerdere tint, is een van de meest stijlvolle manieren om deze dresscode uit te voeren. Daskleuren zoals donker marineblauw, houtskool, bordeauxrood, donkerbruin en donker olijfgroen zijn goede keuzes. Geen enkele stijlvolle man draagt een voor gestrikte vlinderdas, tenzij hij een politieagent is (en de das met klittenband is vastgemaakt), of als hij jonger is dan vijf jaar. Vooral vlinderdassen moeten bij voorkeur met de hand gestrikt worden voor het juiste stijlniveau.

De Zakdoek

Een pochet in het borstzakje van je jasje is geen must, maar een goed ontworpen pochet geeft je ensemble wel een veel stijlvollere uitstraling. De meest ingetogen en uiteindelijk meest stijlvolle keuze is een knisperend witte pochet van een fijne katoenen of linnen stof, waarbij de laatste een vleugje textuur toevoegt. Als de zoom een subtiele donkere kleur heeft die harmonieert met jouw pak, is dit een ander ingetogen en stijl verhogend detail. Als j kiest voor een gekleurde en gedessineerde zakdoek van zijde of een andere stof, gebruik dan geen zakdoek van dezelfde stof als jouw stropdas. Laat de hoofdkleur van de zakdoek eerder harmoniëren dan contrasteren met de kleur van jouw pak en laat het patroon aansluiten op het overhemd en de stropdas.

De schoenen

Je schoenen moeten van een formeel model zijn, bij voorkeur een Oxford of Derbyschoen. De Oxford wordt beschouwd als de meest formele keuze. Zogenaamde monk strap schoenen kunnen ook een goede keuze zijn vanwege hun strakke en opgeruimde karakter, maar worden ook beschouwd als een minder formele schoen.

Qua kleur is zwart de natuurlijke keuze, maar heel donkerbruin kan ook gepast zijn, afhankelijk van het conservatisme van het evenement waar je naartoe gaat. De sokken die je draagt moeten bij voorkeur dezelfde kleur hebben als je pak. Een lichtgewicht wollen breisel is een comfortabel en mooi alternatief.

Accessoires

Over het algemeen laten de meeste formele kledingvoorschriften weinig ruimte voor accessoires die je persoonlijke stijl uitdrukken. We hebben al een paar opties besproken in de hoofdstukken over stropdassen en pochetten.

Manchetknopen: Als je een overhemd draagt met een dubbele manchet, zijn de manchetknopen die je draagt een geweldige manier om persoonlijkheid en stijl uit te drukken. Ze kunnen een familiewapen tonen, connecties met verenigingen waartoe je behoort of andere interessante opties. Een goed gekozen manchetknoop kan ook een leuk gespreksonderwerp zijn. Je hebt er echter baat bij om ze met zorg en finesse te kiezen. Geërfde, gedragen en gepatineerde items zijn de kenmerken van echte stijl. Het horloge dat je bij je pak draagt, is misschien wel het detail dat het meeste zegt over je stijl en persoonlijkheid. Als je niet zo geïnteresseerd bent in horloges, is een net gekleed horloge met een leren bandje dat bij je schoenen past een goede keuze.
