Japanese prep style - three outfits
Publié 2022-04-09
Japanese style is often a wonderful fusion of influences from all over the world, translated into a style that makes Japan unique. The focus lays on the good elements, and refines them further. The preppy style is no exception to this. The cornerstone of good style is a garment that drapes well on the wearer, instead of fitting like a stretched sheet on a newly made bed. Japan excels in this department, making garments with an often looser fit, without being shapeless. Knitted shawl cardigans meet trousers with pleats and penny loafers. Penny loafers and shoes in general are in the Japanese preppy style, often a somewhat coarser variation with thicker outsoles. The width of the trouser legs are loose, for increased drape. In winter, for example, duffel bags and parkas with a well-balanced loose silhouette are a sign of the style. Socks often become a tasteful expression in the outfit. Accessories such as scarfs, ties and pocket squares becomes a part of the style. An inspiring front figure for this style is Shuhei Nishiguchi, menswear director for Beams. We will give you three ways you can dress in a Japanese preppy style below.
Knitwear, chinos and coarser shoes

A casual combination where the knitted top makes the whole outfit keep a well-dressed feel. The socks are an extra ingredient that lifts the whole outfit and or can ruin an outfit if not chosen correctly. A pair of tortoise patterned sun glasses lifts the preppy feeling, they can be chosen with a somewhat coarser frame to add to the Japanese style.
Blazer, white trousers and a v-neck

A polo shirt is a preppy legend which can be combined with stylish chinos and a casual jacket. The shoes set the tone again for the Japanese interpretation. A knitted v-neck can be a nice layer in this context if you want to create more depth in the combination, but also perhaps dress a little warmer on a cooler day.
Cardigan, cap and tie

A cardigan worn together with an Oxford shirt, tie and cap will become a well-dressed, but at the same time casual outfit that is just as fitting for work as it is for dinner with friends. Sneakers and trousers in a loose fit are balanced through a tie, which is of course not necessary if you think there are too many accessories/details.
